An end to the Traditional Latin Mass in the parish

Photo taken at my Silver Jubilee of Ordination

In light of the recent Rescript from Rome the Traditional Latin Mass will be ceasing here at St Catherine's with a final Mass this Saturday at 12 noon.

Following Traditiones Custodes last year the Archbishop had granted a generous dispensation for all the previous Mass times we had to continue: twice during the week and a Sunday Mass.

Although we have some who travel in from outside the parish (as is true for the Ordinary Form Mass here, for those who find its chant, ad orientem and reverence appealing) many of those who attend are parishioners who happily come to both forms. They and I are saddened that it will have to come to an end for now until happier times arrive.

Archbishop Malcolm contacted me personally, for which I thank him, to inform me of what he obviously thinks a necessary step under the orders from Rome. I do not believe it is a step he would have taken had he not felt obliged to do so under the rules now in place. I pray that those rules will change in the future and I have faith in God's Church that they will.

I will continue to celebrate the Traditional Latin Mass where the present rules allow (that is, in any place outside a parish church) and the Archbishop encouraged me to do so.

I am at a loss to understand the logic behind the restrictions the TLM now has to endure. To my mind prayer of any sort, especially in a form which fed the souls of millions - including an army of saints - for hundreds of years. should be joyously encouraged. Honestly, Why wouldn't you? as a modern adage has it.

An old adage comes to mind... Absence makes the heart grow fonder.

There is some comment in the Catholic Herald.

This week sees the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday.
An important day to come to church and receive your ashes if you are to start out on your Lenten observances with the help of God's grace. You won't be able to keep your good intentions without it!

On Shrove Tuesday we will keep the devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus. Gazing upon the face of Christ crucified unites us with all His sorrows, love and total abandonment. “Every time My Face is contemplated I will pour out My Love into the hearts of those persons, and by means of My Holy Face the salvation of many souls will be obtained.” (Our Lord Jesus Christ to Sister Pierina)

The Sacri Vultus – Holy Face – Relic is one of a number of images that were created and actually touched to Veronica’s veil in St. Peter’s Basilica, one of which will be present in church.

FIRST SACRAMENTS.
All parents of Year 4 children and above are invited to a meeting in the Parish Hall this Wednesday 22nd February 2023 at 8pm (Ash Wednesday, following Mass). Teaching jobs in a Catholic school

In response to a growth in pupil numbers, St Peter's International College is seeking to appoint passionate teachers in all disciplines to join the College community in September 2023. It is important that you share our vision, are willing to push the boundaries in your approach to  teaching and learning in order to inspire our pupils from Years 7 to 13 through both academic and personal development.

In addition to the roles below we are interested in hearing from teachers and non-teachers who are excited by the vision of Saint Peter’s and who feel that their skill or experience might support the work that we have embarked upon.

Refreshments served after both Masses

This week sees the Feast of St Blaise on Friday. There will be the traditional Blessing of Throats on the Vigil of His Feast at the end of Novena & Benediction on Thursday evening.
Anyone with children at our Primary School can join us at 9am on Friday, where the Blessing of Throats will also take place.

St Blaise was a Martyr for his Catholic Faith. This Sunday we will hear the Beatitudes during the Gospel. I feel that we often forget the final one:

"Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you."

Let us pray for the many who are persecuted, in all sorts of ways, for their Catholic Faith today.

MASSES THIS WEEK. Please note the new time of 8.30am Mass on Friday Mornings, to allow Fr Simon to participate in our Primary School's weekly act of Worship.

Wednesday is the Feast of the Conversion of St Paul. It marks the end of the Octave of Prayer for Christian Unity, when we pray for all Christians to be united in the one Church of God. This Octave was first conceived by an American, Father Paul of Graymoor in 1907, two years before his entrance into the Catholic Church in 1909. The Octave, as originally conceived by Father Paul, reflects the unchanging truth that there can be no real unity apart from union with that Rock, established by Christ Himself, which is Peter and his successors. For that reason, St. Peter is considered the special Patron of the Octave of Prayer for Christian Unity. It started on the feast, last week, of the Chair of St Peter. You can read a full account of it's origins hereHistorical Profile: Founder of the Octave of Prayer for Christian Unity | EWTN

PRAYER FOR ENGLAND

O blessed Virgin Mary,
Mother of God and our most gentle Queen and Mother,
look down in mercy upon England thy "Dowry"
and upon us all who greatly hope and trust in thee.
By thee it was that Jesus our Saviour and our hope
was given unto the world;
and He has given thee to us that we might hope still more.
Plead for us thy children,
whom thou didst receive and accept at the foot of the Cross,
O sorrowful Mother.
Intercede for our separated brethren, that with us in the one true fold
they may be united to the chief Shepherd, the Vicar of thy Son.
Pray for us all, dear Mother, that by faith fruitful in good works
we may all deserve to see and praise God,
together with thee, in our heavenly home.
Amen.
